9th Grade Math Placement Criteria

ORCUTT ACADEMY HIGH SCHOOL

 Placement Protocol
Ninth grade Placement
For the 2016-17 School Year

1. Eighth grade students will take the Accuplacer Assessment test using the cut scores established by the math department at Allan Hancock College. Students will place into the math class they would be eligible to take if they were going to be attending Allan Hancock College. This data along with grades in their current 8th grade math class and summative assessments from 7th grade will be used to place students. Algebra 1 is the lowest level of math avalible at Orcutt Academy. Placement is as follows:

 a. If a student is taking CPM 3 or Pre-Algebra in 8th grade and places into Geometry/Algebra 2 and has an A or B in their current course they will be placed into Geometry. A notification will go home to parents by email informing them of this placement. If they would like them to start at Algebra 1 instead parents should notify the counseling office.

b. If a student is taking Algebra 1 in 8th grade and they place into Geometry/Algebra 2 they will be placed into Geometry.

c. If a student is taking Geometry or higher in 8th grade they will be placed into the math level they score into on the Accuplacer test. For example, if they place into Geometry/Algebra 2 they will be placed into Algebra 2. If they place into Pre Calculus or high counselors will contact the parents to decide together the best placement for the student.

d. If a student places into a level lower than Algebra 1 and has a placement score below 33 they will be placed into Algebra 1 with a period of Algebra Support.

 2. If a student places into a course they are already taking and passing they will be able to go on to the next level. The counselor will contact parents and discuss placement results to decide which level they feel is appropriate.

 3. Students may be moved in the first month of the school year, or anytime data indicates the student would be better served in a different placement. Parents/guardians will be notified if a change of placement is made.
