Orcutt Union School District is committed to educating students in a safe and healthy environment. Should a student have a temporary disability, which makes school attendance impossible or inadvisable, they continue to receive academic instruction.  If you have questions about Home and Hospital Instruction, please contact Christy Callaghan in the special education office.

  • Home and Hospital Instruction is one of the most restrictive educational placements available and by law must be viewed as the placement of last resort and be utilized for the shortest period of time.

Home and Hospital Instruction enables schools to provide limited instruction to students who are severely restricted and unable to attend school for health reasons. The purpose of Home and Hospital Instruction is to help students maintain continuity of instruction during a temporary, short-term disability.

Home and Hospital Instruction is not the same as every day classroom instruction because the Home and Hospital Teacher Tutor time is limited and Tutor may not have the academic background to teach all subjects. Therefore, students may be behind the class with assignments and knowledge when he/she returns to class.

The student will receive an hour of instruction for each day school is in session, for a maximum of five hours per week.  The schedule of visits is arranged between the parent and the student and the Home Hospital Teacher Tutor.

  • Requests to initiate Home and Hospital Instruction begin in the school office. At that time the school will connect the family with the special education department and/or provide the referral packet. The referral packet must be completely filled out by the family and doctor in order to be considered, and must include the diagnosis, medical restrictions, and the length of time the student is anticipated to be confined.  The parent must have the referral completed by an MD, OD, or clinical psychologist.

  • Any student who is currently enrolled within the district is eligible for the Home and Hospital  Instruction program with verification from their physician. The physician confirms that the student has a condition restricting them to the home or medical setting for a minimum of three weeks. Examples of temporary, short-term disabilities include, but are not limited to: broken limbs, hand injuries, or short-term impairments following an injury, surgery or medical treatments.
